Baroda, Jan 11: Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli continued his remarkable record-breaking run on Sunday, surpassing Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run scorer in international cricket history across formats. Kohli achieved the milestone during the first One-Day International against New Zealand at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.
Kohli went past Sangakkara’s aggregate of 28,016 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20 Internationals combined during the 19th over of India’s innings. The historic moment came when he picked up a single off Michael Bracewell on the fifth ball of the over, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

With this achievement, Kohli now occupies second place on the all-time international run-scoring list, with only Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him. The former India captain amassed 34,357 runs in his international career and remains the leading run scorer in world cricket history.
England’s Joe Root, the only other active batter among the top ten, is currently placed ninth with 22,166 international runs.
Kohli’s career tally now stands at 9,230 runs in Tests, 14,557 runs in ODIs, and 4,188 runs in T20 Internationals. Notably, Kohli has retired from Test and T20I cricket and is currently representing India only in the ODI format at the international level.
