From a modest home to IPS: Anu Beniwal’s journey of grit, integrity

New Delhi, Jan 6: A recent viral video from Gwalior has brought IPS officer Anu Beniwal into the public spotlight, not just for strict enforcement of traffic rules but also for a life story marked by perseverance and sacrifice.

The video, shot during a routine vehicle-checking drive, shows the officer firmly refusing to be influenced by a motorist who attempted to cite political connections. Calm yet decisive, she makes it clear that the law applies equally to all. The vehicle, found without a registration number and fitted with black film, was penalised on the spot. The clip earned widespread praise on social media for reflecting impartial law enforcement.

Anu Beniwal is currently serving as additional superintendent of police in Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh.

Born on April 26, 1992, in Delhi’s Pitampura area, Anu grew up in a family that faced sustained financial and personal challenges. Her father, Sanjay Kumar, ran a small button-manufacturing unit before illness forced him to shut it down. Unable to complete his own education, he was determined that his children would study, regardless of circumstances.

Her mother became the backbone of the household, stitching suits at home to meet daily expenses and support Anu’s education. During Anu’s UPSC preparation years, both parents struggled with serious health issues. Her father developed a heart condition along with hearing loss, while her mother, a neurological patient, underwent two surgeries. Despite this, education remained the family’s priority.

The emphasis on learning bore fruit. Anu’s brother later graduated from IIT Delhi, reflecting the parents’ unwavering commitment to their children’s future.

A bright student from the start, Anu completed her schooling in Delhi before joining Hindu College under the University of Delhi. She earned a BSc degree followed by an MSc and went on to work in nanoscience research for a few years. However, the desire to serve in public administration led her to attempt the Civil Services Examination, with geography as her optional subject.

Her UPSC journey was anything but smooth. In 2018, she failed to clear the preliminary examination. The second attempt saw her reach the mains but fall short of final selection. In her third attempt, she secured an All India Rank of 638 — a notable achievement, yet not enough to realise her ambition.

Undeterred, she appeared for the examination once again in 2022 and secured an All India Rank of 217, earning selection to the Indian Police Service. She was allotted the Madhya Pradesh cadre, marking the culmination of years of struggle and determination.

Currently posted as additional SP in Gwalior, Anu Beniwal has earned recognition for her firm yet fair approach to policing. The recent viral video has come to symbolise her commitment to enforcing the law without fear or favour.

She is married to IPS officer Dr Ayush Jakhar, also from the 2022 batch and serving in the Madhya Pradesh cadre. Dr Jakhar is an MBBS graduate from AIIMS Jodhpur and a former PMT state topper. He is the son of retired IPS officer Dilip Jakhar.

While she is active on social media and known for her focus on fitness, it is her journey from a financially strained household to a senior police position that resonates most strongly. Anu Beniwal’s story stands as a reminder that integrity, discipline, and perseverance can overcome even the steepest odds — long before authority comes with a uniform.
