Byndoor, Jan 1: A youth was killed on the spot and a pillion rider was critically injured in a road accident involving a motorcycle and a Tata Ace vehicle on National Highway 66 at Kambadakone on December 31.

The deceased has been identified as Bhuvan (19), son of Parameshwara Kharvi, a resident of Fisheries Colony near Uppunda Shalebagilu. The injured pillion rider, Madhusudhan (20), son of Girija Kharvi of Uppunda village, has been admitted to a private hospital in Manipal.

Bhuvan and Madhusudhan were travelling from Udupi towards Uppunda on a motorcycle. When they reached Kambadakone, a Tata Ace vehicle allegedly took a U-turn on the national highway. During this time, the rider lost control of the motorcycle and rammed into the Tata Ace. Bhuvan sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. The pillion rider suffered serious injuries to his head, chest and legs and was rushed to Manipal hospital by locals.

The tragic incident, which occurred on the last day of the year, has shocked residents of the area.

Circle Inspector Shivakumar and PSI Sunil Kumar visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered at the Byndoor police station.

Incomplete highway works blamed for accidents

Locals have expressed concern over the frequent accidents occurring along the Kambadakone stretch of National Highway 66, blaming incomplete and unscientific road works.

They pointed out issues such as inadequate street lighting, unfinished service roads and drains, and embankments encroaching onto the main carriageway. Residents have demanded scientific planning of U-turns and traffic-calming measures to ensure vehicles slow down safely and to prevent further accidents.
