Muscat, Dec 21: Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has issued a strict directive for adventure tourism operators, companies, and participants to fully comply with safety guidelines, as the sector continues to grow and attract both local and international visitors.

The ministry emphasized that adherence to these rules is legally mandatory, and violations could result in penalties under Oman’s tourism and environmental protection laws. The measures aim to ensure that activities such as canyoning, rock climbing, hiking, and other outdoor adventures are conducted safely and sustainably, protecting both participants and the country’s natural landscapes.

Key rules for operators include:

• Written Approvals Before Activities: Operators must obtain prior written permission from authorities before conducting any adventure activity on private or government land.
• Inspection and Approval for Equipment: All safety and adventure equipment, such as ropes, zip-lines, and climbing gear, must be inspected and approved by relevant government bodies before use.
• No Tampering with Existing Gear: Altering or damaging safety installations at adventure sites is strictly prohibited, as it endangers future visitors.

Oman’s varied terrain—mountains, wadis, deserts, and coastline—makes it a hotspot for adventure tourism, but these activities carry inherent risks. The ministry’s guidelines are designed to minimize accidents, protect lives, and preserve the environment.

By tying safety compliance to legal accountability, Oman aims to balance adventurous travel with responsible tourism, supporting its goal of becoming a world-class destination while safeguarding its cultural and natural heritage.
