13-year-old Vasai girl dies after school punishment; probe begins

Daijiworld Media Network – Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 16: Tragedy struck on Children’s Day as a 13-year-old girl from Vasai, Kajal Gaud, died at JJ Hospital on Friday night, a week after she was allegedly forced to do 100 sit-ups with her schoolbag on her back for arriving ten minutes late to school.

Kajal, a Class 6 student of Shri Hanumant Vidya Mandir, reportedly began experiencing severe back pain soon after the punishment was given on Nov 8. Her mother said Kajal returned home saying she felt unwell, later complaining of pain from her neck down her back and struggling to move. Her condition worsened despite treatment at two local hospitals, and she was shifted to JJ Hospital, where she died around 11 pm.

While Waliv Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR), officers say they await the postmortem report before moving forward with statements and action.

Local MNS leader Sachin More claimed the girl had asthma or breathing issues, and may not have been able to withstand the physical punishment. Following Kajal’s death, MNS workers locked the school in protest.

Kajal’s mother has squarely blamed the teacher and school for her daughter’s death. A school official, Vikas Yadav, said the institution was ready to accept responsibility if the postmortem confirms the punishment led to her death.

Vasai education officer Pandurang Galange said the department is collecting all details. NCP (SP) functionary Rohit Sasane demanded that school authorities be booked.

Locals also alleged that the school, which has permission only up to Class 8, has illegally enrolled students in Classes 9 and 10 — a practice reportedly common in the Vasai–Virar belt. The education officer confirmed the illegality and assured action.

The investigation into the circumstances leading to Kajal’s death is currently underway.
