UAE launches national shingles vaccination drive for adults aged 50 and above

Dubai, Nov 2: In a significant move to strengthen preventive healthcare, the UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has officially introduced the Herpes Zoster vaccine—commercially known as Shingrix—into the country’s national adult immunisation programme. The new initiative aims to protect residents from Shingles, a painful viral disease caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus.

The vaccine is now available across healthcare facilities in all seven emirates, targeting individuals aged 50 years and above. In addition, adults aged 18 and above with weakened immune systems due to chronic illnesses or medical treatments are also eligible and encouraged to take the vaccine.

Shingles, or Herpes Zoster, develops when the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus that causes chickenpox—reactivates after remaining dormant in the body for years. The infection typically appears as a painful rash and blisters on one side of the body, often accompanied by intense burning or stabbing pain.

Doctors warn that Shingles can lead to serious complications such as Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN)—a nerve condition that causes long-lasting pain even after the rash subsides, severely affecting daily life. Medical experts recommend vaccination even for those who have previously experienced a Shingles outbreak.

The Shingrix vaccine is administered in two doses, with the second shot scheduled two to six months after the first. Health authorities stress the importance of completing the two-dose course for full and lasting protection.

MoHAP has ensured the vaccine is widely accessible through both government and private healthcare facilities:

• Abu Dhabi Citizens: Residents holding a Thiqa card are eligible to receive the vaccine free of cost at authorized centres.

• Insured Residents: In other emirates, coverage depends on insurance policy terms. Leading insurers such as Daman have expanded their DHA Compliant Enhanced plans to include the Shingrix vaccine, making it more affordable for eligible policyholders.

With this nationwide rollout, the UAE has once again underlined its proactive approach to public health, emphasizing prevention over cure. Officials say the inclusion of the Shingrix vaccine is a vital part of ensuring healthy aging and protecting residents from preventable illnesses.

Health authorities are urging all residents aged 50 and above to consult their healthcare providers and get vaccinated promptly.
