New Delhi, Oct 24: Supplements often come up in wellness discussions, promising to fill nutritional gaps we may not cover through food. From tablets and powders to gummies, they’re marketed as quick fixes for overall health. However, experts caution against blindly following trends, especially when it comes to Vitamin D.
Dr Vass, a longevity doctor trained at Cornell, highlighted the risks in an October 23 post. While Vitamin D is essential for bone strength, immune health, and hormone balance, overconsumption can be harmful. “Most people take it blindly without ever checking their levels,” he said. Excess Vitamin D can cause calcium buildup, potentially damaging arteries and kidneys, increasing the risk of heart attacks, and even leading to kidney stones.

Before starting any Vitamin D supplement, Dr Vass advises a simple blood test to determine actual need. “For some, Vitamin D supplementation can be a game changer; for others, it may be unnecessary or even harmful,” he explained.
He also stressed that Vitamin D works best when combined with other nutrients. Pairing it with magnesium helps activate it, and vitamin K2 directs calcium to bones instead of arteries.
Dr Vass summarised four key steps for safe supplementation: avoid following trends blindly, get tested to know if your body needs it, optimise dosage and timing for your individual needs, and seek professional guidance rather than relying on social media advice.
The takeaway is clear: Vitamin D can be beneficial, but only when used wisely and personalized to your body’s needs.
