Dubai drives into the future: RTA unveils AI-powered smart traffic system to cut congestion by 37%

Dubai, Oct 24: In a major leap towards intelligent mobility, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a revolutionary traffic upgrade that will redefine the city’s driving experience. By combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cutting-edge V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology, Dubai aims to reduce traffic congestion by up to 37% while delivering real-time traffic updates directly to vehicle dashboards.

The new system, known as the V2X Network, connects vehicles with traffic signals, intersections, and infrastructure, allowing drivers to receive live data through built-in dashboards or mobile integrations such as CarPlay and Android Auto.

Once implemented, motorists will have access to features such as countdown timers showing how long before a signal changes, optimal speed recommendations to glide through intersections, and instant alerts for accidents, congestion, and diversions — all aimed at smoother, safer travel.

At the heart of this transformation lies the AI-powered UTC-UX Fusion system, which dynamically controls traffic signals based on real-time conditions. Using advanced computer vision, the system analyzes footage from cameras to detect congestion, vehicle flow, and pedestrian activity. It also employs digital twin simulations, creating a virtual copy of Dubai’s road network to test new traffic strategies before implementation.

The results from early trials are already impressive — intersection efficiency has improved by nearly 37% in areas like Jumeirah Street, while citywide travel times have dropped between 10% and 20%.

According to RTA officials, Phase 1, covering around 300 major intersections, is expected to be completed by Q3 2026, while full V2X deployment across all 620 intersections will follow between 2027 and 2028.

To ensure seamless integration, Dubai is partnering with international car manufacturers so that new vehicles will come factory-equipped with V2X compatibility. Older cars, too, will benefit from reduced congestion and can access data via add-on devices or smartphone apps.

With this ambitious initiative, Dubai is positioning itself at the forefront of smart, sustainable transport systems — where your car’s dashboard will soon serve as an intelligent co-pilot, guiding you through the city’s roads with precision, efficiency, and ease.
