Goa CM Pramod Sawant unveils logo and anthem for FIDE Chess World Cup 2025

Panaji, Oct 22: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday unveiled the official logo and anthem for the upcoming FIDE Chess World Cup 2025, scheduled to be held in Goa from October 31 to November 27 at the Indoor Stadium, Campal.

Addressing the gathering, Sawant said, “Over the last few years, Goa’s chess culture has grown tremendously. Goans are competing at national and international events. It makes us truly proud to see this revolution of mind taking shape in Goa. The symbol reflects intellect and carries the soul of Goa and the spirit of chess. Goa is ready to host the global championship with grace. The anthem adds another layer to the story. Hosting this event marks a major achievement for Goa and India.”

The CM also engaged in a symbolic chess game, with Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar making the next move. The launch was attended by AICF president Nitin Narang, secretary Dev Patel, V. Candavelou, Chief Secretary Goa, Goa Chess Association president Mahesh Candolkar, and Director of Sports Ajay Gaude.

The FIDE World Cup returns to India after 23 years, with the last edition in 2002 won by Viswanathan Anand. The 2025 tournament will feature 206 players from 82 countries, competing in a knock-out format for a total prize fund of $2 million.

“The World Cup is a dream that belongs to every Goan and every Indian. After 23 years, the FIDE World Cup returns to India. It is an honour and pride for our nation,” said Sawant.
The top three finishers will earn coveted spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, the penultimate stage leading to the World Chess Championship.

Among the top contenders are Gukesh D, Arjun Erigaisi, Praggnanandhaa R, Anish Giri, Wesley So, and other leading international players. Divya Deshmukh, winner of the Women’s World Cup, will also participate via a wildcard entry.

With Goa hosting this prestigious event, the state is set to witness world-class chess action while showcasing its growing stature in the global chess arena.
