Ceasefire under strain: Israel launches airstrikes on Rafah after accusing Hamas of attacks

Daijiworld Media Network – Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv, Oct 19: Tensions flared once again in southern Gaza as Israel accused Hamas of attacking its forces in Rafah, marking the first major test of the fragile US-brokered ceasefire that came into effect just nine days ago.

According to Israeli military officials, Hamas militants allegedly targeted Israeli troops with rocket-propelled grenades and sniper fire in Rafah, prompting Israel to respond with a series of airstrikes in the area. The Israeli side also reported casualties among its forces following the assault.

A military source familiar with the incident stated that the attack took place beyond the Yellow Line — the demarcation point marking Israel’s initial withdrawal boundary as per the ceasefire terms.

In response to the escalating situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to hold a high-level security consultation with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and the military chief to assess the developments.

Meanwhile, Hamas has yet to issue an official statement addressing Israel’s allegations. However, senior Hamas leader Izzat Al-Rishq dismissed the claims, stating on Telegram that the group remains committed to the ceasefire and accused Israel of “fabricating weak pretexts to justify its crimes.”

The renewed violence has raised fears that the already fragile truce could collapse, derailing ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the region after months of intense conflict.
