Dubai, Oct 14: Dubai’s notorious traffic jams may soon become history as Elon Musk’s The Boring Company begins constructing the Dubai Loop, a 17-kilometre underground electric transit system set to open in 2026.

The project was announced by UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Omar Sultan Al Olama, at GITEX 2025. Designed to move commuters across the city within minutes, the Dubai Loop promises a blend of speed, sustainability, and futuristic innovation.

The system will feature underground tunnels where small electric vehicles, including Teslas and custom pods, will transport passengers at speeds of up to 160 kmph. It aims to carry 20,000 passengers per hour in its first phase across 11 stations linking key commercial and residential zones.

“This will be the first Boring Company Loop system outside the United States,” Minister Al Olama said, calling it a milestone in Dubai’s vision to lead future mobility.

Founded by Elon Musk in 2016, The Boring Company has already demonstrated the technology through its operational Loop in Las Vegas. The Dubai project will see the company handle design, construction, and operation while ensuring smart safety and minimal surface disruption.

According to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, the Loop supports the UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031 and Smart Mobility Vision 2040, which aim to automate a quarter of all city travel.

By tackling congestion, heat, and pollution, the Dubai Loop will offer cool, quiet, and emission-free underground rides that drastically cut commute times. If completed on schedule, it will become the world’s first large-scale underground micro-transit system, redefining urban mobility and making Dubai a global pioneer in futuristic transport.
