Moodbidri playground turns hazardous: Citizens call for immediate safety measures

Moodbidri, Oct 10: Residents of Moodbidri have raised strong concerns over the unsafe and deteriorating condition of children’s play equipment at the public park near Swaraj Maidan. The neglected state of the area has turned what should be a joyful space into a potential danger zone for young visitors.

A recent inspection, supported by photographic evidence, has revealed several alarming issues that demand urgent attention. Seesaws, climbers, and exercise bikes are found to be broken, rusted, or unstable. Plastic seats are cracked, leaving sharp edges that can cause injuries. Corroded metal structures and exposed bolts increase the risk of tetanus. Loose screws in rope climbing equipment threaten to pierce children’s hands or legs, while torn trampoline nets and unstable frames pose a high risk of falls. Untrimmed grass and poorly maintained sand areas create tripping hazards and make it difficult for parents to supervise their children. These issues clearly indicate years of neglect and lack of proper safety checks.

Despite these dangers, many children continue to play in the area daily, unaware of the potential harm. The hazards could lead to serious injuries such as cuts, sprains, or broken bones, infections due to contact with rusted surfaces, and emotional trauma caused by accidents. There is also the possibility of legal repercussions for the authorities responsible for maintaining public spaces.

Residents claim that their repeated complaints have gone unanswered. The paint has faded, metal parts have rusted, and several components are either missing or damaged beyond repair. The absence of routine maintenance reflects a troubling lack of accountability and disregard for public safety by the concerned departments.

Local citizens are now urging the authorities to take immediate corrective measures. Their demands include temporarily closing unsafe sections of the playground, repairing or replacing broken and corroded structures, conducting monthly inspections by trained safety officers, and installing protective padding, boundary fences, and visible warning signs.

Residents have also appealed to the media to bring this issue to wider public attention, emphasizing that every child deserves a safe and clean space to play. The current state of the playground is unacceptable and requires prompt action to prevent avoidable tragedies. This situation highlights the urgent need for improved maintenance systems and stricter oversight of all public play areas in Moodbidri and beyond.
