India powers ahead: Record energy output and diversified supply signal drive for energy independence

New Delhi, Sep 21: India is producing unprecedented levels of energy as part of its push toward self-reliance, with a sharp focus on diversifying its energy sources and expanding domestic capacity, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said at an industry event in New Delhi.

Highlighting the country’s growing energy appetite, Puri stated that India now imports fuel and energy products from 40 countries, up from just 27 in previous years. Even in the case of cooking gas, once heavily dependent on a single nation, the supply base has now widened. Alongside traditional fuels, India’s energy mix increasingly includes biofuels, green hydrogen, and other alternative sources, he said.

With India’s economy growing at around 6.5%, the minister noted that the country’s energy consumption is rising nearly six times faster than the global average. International forecasts suggest that India will drive about 25% of the total increase in global energy demand over the next 20 years.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is undergoing a major transformation in energy security. While consumption continues to rise, substantial steps are being taken to boost domestic production and secure future supplies. A key part of this strategy is the National Green Hydrogen Mission, under which 19 companies have been allocated a combined annual production capacity of 862,000 tonnes. Furthermore, 15 companies have been awarded the right to manufacture 3,000 MW worth of electrolysers annually.

India’s momentum in clean energy is also accelerating, with over 223 GW of installed renewable energy capacity—comprising 108 GW from solar power and 51 GW from wind. The country is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, positioning itself among the world’s most ambitious renewable energy markets.

In addition, the government has laid out plans to increase the share of natural gas in the country’s energy mix from the current 6% to 15% by 2030, further signaling a shift toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

India’s strategic approach is not only about meeting growing domestic demand but also about building a resilient, future-ready energy ecosystem.
