Sullia, Sept 20: In a swift breakthrough, Sullia police have arrested two young men in connection with the theft of arecanut from a godown, recovering both the stolen goods and the vehicle allegedly used in the crime.

The accused have been identified as Suprith K (22) of Mandekolu village and Mohammed Sinan (21) of Jalkuru village, both hailing from Sullia taluk.

The incident took place on the night of September 19, when a stock of arecanut was stolen from a storage godown belonging to Mohammed Rafiq S D, a grocery store owner in Ajjavara Pete. The godown, used for storing arecanut, falls under the jurisdiction of the Sullia police station.

Acting on credible leads, the police tracked the suspects and detained them near the Mururu checkpost in Mandekolu. During the operation, police recovered approximately 1 quintal of stolen arecanut and seized an auto bearing registration number KA 21 C 5862, allegedly used to transport the stolen goods.

“We were able to act quickly thanks to local intelligence and effective coordination by our team,” a police official said.

Following their arrest, both accused were produced before the court, and further investigation is underway to ascertain whether others were involved in the theft.

Police have also urged traders and godown owners in the region to remain vigilant, particularly during the harvest and trading seasons, when theft cases tend to spike.
