Lourdes Central School hosts CBSE COE training on disaster management

Mangaluru, Sep 11: The COE training programme on disaster management was organized at Lourdes Central School on September 11 for teaching staff, under the leadership of Fr Johnson L Sequeira, principal, of Lourdes Central School. The session aimed to equip educators with the knowledge and preparedness to handle disasters effectively within a school environment.

The programme was expertly compered by Lizy Fernandes, who smoothly conducted the day's proceedings. The programme commenced with a soulful prayer song rendered by the school choir, under the guidance of Roshan and Angelina, seeking divine blessings for the success of the event.

Bindu extended a warm and heartfelt welcome to the dignitaries, resource persons and staff. She introduced the theme of the training and emphasized its relevance.

Fr Johnson L Sequeira, principal addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of disaster preparedness in schools and appreciating the Centre of Excellence (Bangalore) initiative. He encouraged the staff to actively participate and absorb practical knowledge from the session.

The training was facilitated by two esteemed resource persons: Dr Shashikumar KC from Vidyadayinee English Medium School, Surathkal and Shreedhara B, SSSLS VidyaKendra, Alike, SatyaSaiVihar, Dakshina Kannada.

The programme equipped stakeholders with the skills to develop comprehensive emergency response plans tailored to the unique needs and vulnerabilities of the educational institution. The discussion on "Why disaster management matters in education" yielded answers such as protecting lives, preserving learning continuity and fostering resilience. Interactive discussions and real-life case studies enhanced the learning experience for participants by discussing the disaster management cycle, preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation.

The need for a school disaster management plan was emphasized. The resource persons stressed the importance of forming a school disaster management committee, responsible for drafting, reviewing, guiding and monitoring the plan. Additional responsibilities included delegating maintenance tasks, acquiring necessary awareness materials, guiding and monitoring awareness activities (including training task forces and conducting mock drills), and coordinating with local authorities and parents/guardians during emergencies.

Reema proposed the vote of thanks. The programme concluded successfully, with active participation and positive feedback from attendees.
