Migrant worker’s death after diarrhoea scare at Cutbona fishing jetty

Margao, Sep 5: The sudden death of a 50-year-old migrant worker from Odisha after suffering from diarrhoea has triggered concern at the Cutbona fishing jetty, where several suspected diarrhoea and even a cholera case have been reported since the start of the new fishing season.

The deceased, identified as Debachan Kisan, was declared brought dead at the South Goa District Hospital on Thursday. Police inquiries revealed that Kisan had been admitted to the same hospital on August 29 after developing diarrhoea and was discharged on September 3. Later, he reportedly had dinner and went to sleep, but was found unconscious the next morning. Despite being rushed to a local doctor and then to hospital, he could not be revived.

Cuncolim Police Inspector Diego Gracias said the body has been preserved for post-mortem at South Goa District Hospital mortuary. He added that while it appears to be a case linked to diarrhoea, the exact cause of death will be confirmed after medical examination.

Authorities have alerted the Primary Health Centre overseeing the Cutbona jetty area as a precautionary step. Last month, the district administration had reported 19 suspected diarrhoea cases and one confirmed cholera case from the same fishing hub, prompting a review meeting chaired by South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus, IAS.
