New York, Aug 30: The Greenwich Village apartment building of New York times executive editor Joseph Kahn was vandalized early Friday morning with red paint and graffiti, police said.
The walls and front steps of the building were covered in red paint. At the base of the steps, the words “Joe Kahn lies Gaza dies” were spray-painted.
The New York Times has faced criticism for its coverage of the war in Gaza. Last month, its Times Square headquarters was similarly vandalized with red paint and the message, “NYT lies Gaza dies.”
No arrests have been made in the latest incident. The New York police department confirmed the investigation is ongoing. The times said it is cooperating with authorities.
“People are free to disagree with The New York Times’s reporting, but vandalism and targeting of individuals and their families crosses a line,” said NYT spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander.
Activists have frequently used red paint to protest the war, targeting buildings of newspapers, political figures, and other institutions.
Since the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, pro-Palestinian demonstrations have occurred nationwide, including arrests following protests at the New York Times building.
The Israel-Hamas war has caused heavy casualties on both sides. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports 63,025 deaths and 159,490 injuries in Gaza. The Israeli government says 1,200 people were killed in the Hamas attack and 251 hostages were taken, of whom 48 remain in Gaza, with only 20 believed to be alive.
