China unveils ‘Darwin Monkey’, the world’s largest brain-inspired AI chip

Beijing, Aug 30: Chinese researchers have introduced the world’s largest computer chip, dubbed “Darwin Monkey” or “Wukong,” modelled on the neural structure of the macaque brain. The system boasts over 2 billion artificial neurons and more than 100 billion synapses, aiming to provide a major platform for developing artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Built on spiking neural networks (SNNs) that mimic the communication of biological neurons, Darwin Monkey processes data through bursts of electrical activity, allowing parallel computation while saving energy. The system reportedly consumes just 2,000W and operates with 960 Darwin III neuromorphic chips, each equipped with millions of spiking neurons.

Developed by Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Lab with funding from Alibaba Group, Darwin Monkey demonstrates capabilities in logical reasoning, mathematical problem solving, and content creation. Early applications include simulating the brains of zebrafish and mice, promising to accelerate cognitive science research and AI development.

The achievement surpasses previous neuromorphic systems, including Intel’s Hala Point, which simulated 1.15 billion neurons. Unlike conventional supercomputers that rely on vast processing cores, neuromorphic machines like Darwin Monkey physically emulate the brain’s architecture, offering a new route toward human-like intelligence.

Researchers believe Darwin Monkey could help bridge the gap between current AI systems and true AGI, reimagining machine capabilities and advancing both neuroscience and artificial intelligence.
