Panaji, Aug 27: After a lull of nearly a week, the monsoon regained momentum in Goa on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert till August 29. The State received light to moderate showers, with 7.5 mm recorded till evening.
According to IMD data, Goa has so far received 2,531.6 mm of rain this season — 2.5 per cent below the normal of 2,597.6 mm. The fresh spell is attributed to a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the Odisha coast, accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above sea level.
In the 24 hours ending Monday night, Valpoi recorded the highest rainfall at 27.2 mm, followed by Dharbandora (18.6 mm). Other places witnessed lighter showers — Canacona (12.4 mm), Pernem (10.8 mm), Sanguem (9.7 mm), Margao (9 mm), Sanquelim (8.6 mm), Mapusa (4.2 mm), Ela (Old Goa) (4 mm), Mormugao (3.8 mm), while Panaji received just 1.9 mm.
