Agartala, Aug 26: In a shocking case of mob violence, a woman was tied to an electric pole, thrashed, and her hair forcibly cut in Tripura’s Gomati district after an alleged quarrel with her mother-in-law. The incident, which took place in Udaipur area, was captured on video and has sparked widespread outrage after circulating on social media.

The footage shows the woman’s hands tied behind her back as she is pushed into a drain and tonsured by another woman, while onlookers, including minors, record the act. The victim alleged that neighbours blackened her face, hung a garland of shoes around her neck, and assaulted her at the instigation of her mother-in-law.

Police have registered a case under sections of wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing hurt, assault on a woman with intent to disrobe, and criminal intimidation. Three women – Manju Rani Das (60), Putul Rani Das (50), and Hamida Banu (60) – have been arrested.

BJP district president Sabita Nag met superintendent of police Dr Kiran Kumar K, demanding strict punishment for the accused. She said the BJP and the state government did not condone such acts, while accusing the opposition CPM and Congress of politicising the matter. Asked about the alleged involvement of a BJP-linked woman in the assault, Nag said the party would wait for the investigation outcome before taking disciplinary steps.

The incident has revived memories of past mob assaults on women in Tripura, including the infamous Chandrapur Kalibari case during the Left Front rule. Rights groups have stressed the urgent need for stronger safeguards and awareness campaigns to curb such brutalities.
