India takes flight: Indigenous jet engine manufacturing to begin with French collaboration

New Delhi, Aug 23: India is set to take a monumental leap in its aerospace capabilities with the domestic production of engines for fifth-generation fighter aircraft, in collaboration with French aerospace leader Safran. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the strategic partnership during an event in New Delhi, calling it a pivotal moment in the nation's journey toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The announcement aligns with India's broader ambitions under the 'Make in India' initiative, which Singh described as a platform not just for domestic growth, but for global collaboration. “When you Make in India, you make for the world,” he said, while urging global defence firms and investors to become part of the country’s rapidly evolving defence manufacturing ecosystem. He assured full government support, including clearances and guidance for foreign partners.

This development follows the recent approval of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, a flagship fifth-generation fighter jet initiative spearheaded by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in coordination with private industry. The engine manufacturing partnership with Safran is expected to power this cutting-edge platform and reduce India’s reliance on foreign propulsion systems.

India's defence sector has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade. Singh noted that defence exports have skyrocketed from just Rs 686 crore in 2013–14 to Rs 23,622 crore in 2024–25, reaching nearly 100 countries. The government aims to scale exports to Rs 30,000 crore this year and hit Rs 50,000 crore by 2029. Simultaneously, domestic defence production has surged, tripling from Rs 40,000 crore in 2014 to over Rs 1.5 lakh crore this fiscal, with expectations to cross Rs 2 lakh crore soon.

With this latest move, India signals its readiness to not only build for itself but also emerge as a formidable global player in defence innovation and manufacturing.
