Margao, Aug 19: Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Kumar on Monday reviewed the law and order situation in South Goa in the wake of the violent gang clash at Mungul and the assault on police personnel at Betul.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting at the South Goa police headquarters, DGP Kumar said the department has taken a “serious view” of the Mungul shootout. He confirmed that 18 people have been arrested in connection with the incident and assured that strict action would be taken to send a strong message against such acts of violence.

On August 12, masked assailants had attacked two youths on the Margao-Colva road using swords, sticks, soda bottles, and other weapons. Shots were also fired at their car, leaving the victims injured and their vehicle damaged.

DGP Kumar also highlighted that unlicensed private security agencies in the state would soon be identified, and legal action would follow against those operating without authorisation.

Referring to the August 17 Canaginium incident, where two constables were assaulted, the police chief said six suspects have already been arrested. “They will be dealt with firmly, as per the law of the land,” he asserted, stressing the force’s zero-tolerance stance against attacks on law enforcers.

The police assured that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain peace and order in the state.
