Udupi, Aug 10: To maintain law and order, prevent accidents and curb reckless driving, police in Udupi city and Manipal limits have implemented several precautionary measures, including special night operations.
The move follows repeated complaints about theft cases in Udupi–Manipal, drunk driving at night and misbehaviour with the public. With schools and colleges reopening, police have also begun early surveillance to monitor student activities.

Shops in Manipal to close by 10 pm
In Manipal police station limits, all shops and commercial establishments must close by 10 pm. In Udupi and other surrounding areas, closing time is fixed between 10.30 pm and 11 pm. Shops remaining open beyond permitted hours are given one or two warnings, after which cases will be booked.
Liquor shops must close by 10.30 pm, bars by 11.30 pm, and clubs, star hotels and boarding houses by midnight. Police are also cracking down on people purchasing liquor late at night and consuming it on roadsides after buying food from hotels or petty shops. Action is being taken against those involved in gambling, and loiterers are being questioned.
Multiple checkposts and continuous patrols
On weekends, police have set up several checkposts to catch drunk drivers and penalise those driving at excessive speeds. Continuous night patrols are being conducted at Perampalli and KoiN Circle in Manipal, MIT, Eshwar Nagar, and Alevoor Road. In Udupi city, police are maintaining constant watch near Clock Tower, City and Service Bus Stands.
To encourage helmet use among two-wheeler riders, the department has released a special poster featuring characters Ravi Anna and Bhanu from the recently released film “Su From So”, both wearing helmets on a scooter. The poster reads: “Wear a helmet like Ravi Anna” with the tagline, “Your safety is our right.”
Public urged to report complaints
To ensure law and order, the district is strictly following the beat system and enforcement of regulations. Police have assured that they will respond promptly to any type of complaint from the public. For complaints, the police control room can be contacted, said Hariram Shankar, district superintendent of police.
