Karnataka reports 2.3 lac dog bite cases, 19 rabies deaths in six months

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Aug 6: Karnataka has reported a staggering 2.31 lac dog bite cases and 19 rabies-related deaths in the first six months of 2025, according to official data released by the state health department. The numbers mark a significant rise compared to the same period in 2024, when 1.69 lac dog bite cases and 18 rabies deaths were recorded — indicating a 36.20% surge in bite incidents.

Last year, the state had registered 3.6 lac dog bite cases and 42 rabies deaths by the end of 2024. The current year's data, covering the period from January 1 to June 30, has been compiled under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) of the health department.

A recent incident in Hubballi, where a video of stray dogs attacking and dragging a three-year-old girl went viral, further underlined the growing menace of stray dogs. Officials acknowledge that earlier such cases often went unreported, but improved reporting mechanisms have now brought more accurate data to light.

"These incidents are not new, but previously they were not reported with this level of accuracy. Now, better reporting systems are helping us understand the extent of the issue," said Harsha Gupta, principal secretary, health and family welfare department.

To address the growing crisis, the department is taking multiple steps, including raising public awareness and training doctors on how to treat dog bite victims. Urban local bodies and gram panchayats have also been instructed to control the stray dog population effectively, Gupta added.

It is important to note that the local administration that Stray dogs crave for food and shelter. The Government should ensure that they are provided with dog shelters and food. It works out cheaper for the Government to vaccinate the dogs with the anti-rabies vaccine for the safety of the stray dogs and humans in the vicinity. The attitude of a few dog haters is reprehensible. They stone these dogs for no reason, just because they bark. Few motorists try to run over these poor animals when they rest on the roads because there is shade from the trees or sleep on the footpath. This is cruel and aggravates the problem of stray dogs chasing motorists. There are a few residential layouts where the used sanitary pads are thrown on the streets, which the stray dogs consume and attack humans instantly. The other perennial problem is Government veterinary doctors having their private clinics, using up the medicine for stray dogs given free by the Government in their private clinics, which has resulted in the stray dogs having no one to care for them. They spend more time in their private clinic and have a double income. The government should initiate a scheme to vaccinate the stray dogs, provide dog shelter and food for them.

The government should establish and manage dedicated dog shelters (or "Dog Salas") for stray dogs. These shelters would help: Provide food, water, and medical care to stray dogs Reduce the number of stray animals on the streets Improve public health and safety Support adoption programs and animal welfare education This initiative would show compassion for animals and create a cleaner, safer environment for everyone.

Already they are planning to serve Biriyanis to stray dogs. Budget is allotted. My suggestion is they should provide some starters before the biriyani is served!
