Dubai, Aug 5: In a historic leap for regional transport infrastructure, the UAE and Oman are joining forces to launch their first-ever cross-border railway network. The ambitious project, named Hafeet Rail, after the iconic Jebel Hafeet mountain that spans both nations' borders, marks a major milestone in Gulf cooperation, trade, and mobility.
?? What Is Hafeet Rail?
Hafeet Rail is a trilateral joint venture formed by Etihad Rail (UAE), Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company. With a total investment of $2.5 billion (approx. 960 million Omani rials), the railway will physically and economically link the UAE and Oman for the first time by rail—connecting the Etihad Rail network at Al Ain to Sohar Port in Oman.
Spanning 303 kilometres, the line is designed to revolutionize passenger and freight movement between the two countries.
?? Strategic Vision Behind the Project
The Hafeet Rail initiative is more than just infrastructure—it's a strategic blueprint to:
• Deepen economic integration between the UAE and Oman
• Establish a unified logistics corridor across borders
• Accelerate regional development by boosting tourism, trade, and workforce mobility
• Streamline transportation with eco-friendly, high-speed alternatives to road travel
?? Benefits for Travellers
For passengers, Hafeet Rail promises to transform the travel experience with:
• Drastically reduced travel times:
o Abu Dhabi to Sohar: 1 hour 40 minutes (currently ~3 hrs 25 mins)
o Sohar to Al Ain: 47 minutes (currently ~1 hr 27 mins)
• High-speed comfort:
o Passenger trains reaching up to 200 km/h, designed for a smooth and modern travel experience
• Enhanced accessibility:
o A viable alternative to long road trips and airport hassles for commuters, weekend travellers, and business professionals
• Cross-border tourism boost:
o Easier access to scenic spots in both countries, turning UAE and Oman into dual-destination travel hubs
• Breathtaking views:
o A rail journey through mountains, valleys, and desert landscapes, including the majestic Jebel Hafeet region
?? Logistics and Freight Integration
Beyond passengers, the rail line will play a crucial role in cargo movement:
• Freight trains operating at 120 km/h
• Connection to over 15 integrated freight hubs
• Linkage to 5 major ports
• Over 12 cities and passenger stations connected across the two nations
This integration will streamline trade routes, reduce road congestion, and cut down shipping times and costs between UAE and Oman’s industrial zones and ports.
??? Project Timeline and Construction Status
Construction of the Hafeet Rail has officially commenced. While no final operational date has been confirmed yet, the Hafeet Rail Company is currently working to finalize the timeline for completion.
