Kundapur, Aug 3: A tragic road accident occurred on Sunday afternoon near Bhatrahadi Cross, close to Santhe Market on National Highway-66 in Kundapur, where a woman lost her life after falling from a moving moped and being run over by a private bus.

The deceased has been identified as Jalaja (64), a resident of Korgi in Kundapur taluk and the wife of Manja.

According to reports, Manja was riding his moped with his wife Jalaja seated pillion. They were returning from their son-in-law’s house in Anagalli to their home in Korgi around 12:30 pm via National Highway 66.

As they approached Bhatrahadi, near the Santhe Market, a private bus named Mahaveer, driven by a person identified as Prasanna and heading from Bhatkal to Kundapur, attempted to overtake them.

During the overtaking manoeuvre, the bus allegedly lost control, causing Jalaja to fall off the moped and onto the road. Tragically, the rear wheel of the bus ran over her neck, resulting in her death on the spot.

Notably, the same bus had reportedly experienced issues earlier. It had been parked at a petrol station in Bhatkal on Saturday night and had unexpectedly started moving by itself on Sunday morning, crashing into an electric pole and damaging its front section, including the windscreen. The bus was being driven to Udupi for repairs when it was involved in this second, fatal accident in Kundapura.

A case has been registered at the Kundapur traffic police station, and further investigations are underway.
