Dubai, Aug 3: In a landmark development for the UAE’s transport sector, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, travelled aboard the Etihad Rail passenger train from Dubai to Fujairah, marking a key phase in the ambitious 1,200-km national railway project.

Describing the experience as a memorable ride, Sheikh Mohammed shared glimpses of the journey on social media and was received by Etihad Rail officials led by Chief Business Support Officer Saeed AlAhbabi. He was updated on the project's milestones and emphasized the importance of Etihad Rail as a vital economic lifeline that reflects the spirit of the Union.

Sheikh Mohammed said the railway will serve as a cornerstone in creating an integrated national transport network that enhances the UAE’s standing as a leading logistics hub, while facilitating the seamless movement of people and goods. He highlighted the project’s potential to strengthen national unity, support sustainability, and improve quality of life across emirates.

The passenger rail service is expected to begin operations in 2026, with trains capable of speeds up to 200 km/hr. It will connect 11 major cities and regions including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Al Ain, Ruwais, and Ghuweifat. The network is designed to carry 400 passengers per train and aims to serve 36.5 million passengers annually by 2030.

Etihad Rail, with an investment of AED 40 billion, will also extend into Saudi Arabia and Oman, linking key ports, industrial zones, and inland cities. Phase one of the project, launched in 2016, is already operational for freight transport, while phase two, initiated in 2020, expands passenger and freight capacity across the country.

The railway network plays a strategic role in reducing carbon emissions in line with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals, while improving mobility, boosting tourism, and enhancing regional development.

Etihad Rail Chairman Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said Sheikh Mohammed’s journey underscores the leadership’s dedication to national projects that drive long-term progress and integration. He credited Sheikh Mohammed’s vision as instrumental to the project’s inclusion in the 'Projects of the 50' initiative and the 2023 inauguration of the national freight network.

The visit comes shortly after Sheikh Mohammed made a surprise inspection of a Dubai Tram station, interacting with passengers and reviewing services firsthand, reflecting his grounded and people-focused leadership style.
