Jewellery shop owner attacked with hammer in Goa, attacker flees

Margao, Jul 23: In a shocking incident that has triggered public outrage in Margao, a masked man attacked a jewellery shop owner with a hammer in broad daylight at Borda on Tuesday evening before fleeing the scene.

The victim, Sohan Raikar, suffered bleeding injuries during the assault and was immediately rushed to South Goa District Hospital for treatment. The incident occurred around 6:30 pm when Raikar was alone at his shop located on the busy Borda road.

According to police, the assailant entered the shop claiming he wanted to sell gold ornaments belonging to his mother. However, once inside, he pulled out a hammer from his bag and began attacking Raikar. A scuffle ensued, but the attacker managed to escape. Fortunately, no jewellery was stolen.

Fatorda police, led by PI Nathan Almeida and supervised by DySP Sidhant Shirodkar, launched an immediate investigation. A fingerprint expert and sniffer dog were deployed at the scene.

“Preliminary investigations indicate the attacker failed to rob the shop. We are working to identify him and determine the motive,” said DySP Shirodkar.

A case of assault has been registered, and efforts are underway to trace the attacker.
