Cairo, Jul 20: In a fierce exchange of fire in Egypt’s twin city of Giza, two suspected militants were shot dead by police during a counterterror operation on Sunday. The gunfight broke out when security forces raided a hideout in the densely populated Bolaq el-Dakrour neighbourhood, officials confirmed.
The Interior Ministry identified the deceased as members of the Hasm movement, a militant faction believed to be linked to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. The group has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, and Egyptian authorities suspect it of planning subversive attacks within the country.
The dramatic confrontation also claimed the life of a civilian bystander, while a police officer sustained injuries during the crossfire. The raid was launched based on intelligence inputs suggesting an imminent threat posed by the suspects.
Over the past few years, Egyptian security forces have aggressively cracked down on Islamist insurgents, particularly in the volatile Sinai Peninsula. While many militants have been neutralized in that region, sporadic threats continue to emerge in other urban areas, including Cairo and Giza.
Sunday’s operation marks yet another chapter in Egypt's ongoing battle against extremism, with authorities reiterating their commitment to preventing terrorist networks from regaining a foothold in the country.
