Mangaluru, July 20: Dakshina Kannada district experienced widespread and heavy rainfall on July 19. The day began with intense showers which later eased slightly. As a precaution, a holiday was declared for schools in Mangaluru city, Ullal, and Bantwal taluk.
Rainfall was recorded across various parts of the district including Bantwal, BC Road, Kalladka, Vittal, Kanyana, Belthangady, Dharmasthala, Madanthyar, Uppinangady, Puttur, Sullia, Subrahmanya, Panja, Kollamogru, Kadaba, Ullal, Talapady, Suratkal, Moodbidri, and Bajpe. While the city saw good rainfall in the morning, it remained cloudy throughout the day with intermittent showers.

In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on July 19, the rainfall recorded in taluks is as follows: Beltangady – 8.5 mm, Bantwal – 43.1 mm, Mangaluru – 55.4 mm, Puttur – 32.6 mm, Sullia – 31 mm, Moodbidri – 21.9 mm, Kadaba – 26.6 mm, Mulki – 28.5 mm, and Ullal – 48.1 mm. The district recorded an average of 28 mm of rainfall. Damage was reported to 22 electric poles.
Rescue teams have been deployed, including 15 personnel from SDRF and Civil Defence in Mangaluru, 10 in Subrahmanya, and 25 NDRF personnel in Puttur. Additionally, 26 boats have been kept on standby for emergency use.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for July 20 in coastal Karnataka, anticipating heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and high waves in the Arabian Sea.
Steady rainfall continues in Udupi sistrict
The IMD has extended the red alert for Udupi district until July 21, forecasting more intense rainfall in the coming days. On Saturday, areas like Byndoor, Kundapur, Karkala, Hebri, Manipal, Udupi, Malpe, Kota, Brahmavar, Katapady, Shirva, Kaup, and Padubidri received substantial rainfall. From early morning, it rained continuously with overcast skies across the region.
