Udupi, Jul 18: The compound of the Primary Health Centre near the City Municipality Office on Kavi Muddanna Road has turned into a potential mosquito breeding ground due to the unchecked growth of bushes and weeds.

Ironically, the surroundings of the health centre—which is expected to set an example of cleanliness and hygiene—are now plagued by unhygienic conditions. Dense vegetation has created a haven for venomous snakes and poisonous insects, posing a serious threat to public health.

With the onset of the monsoon, concerns have heightened over the possible outbreak of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.

The entire compound is covered with overgrown grass and weeds. If timely cleaning measures are not taken, it could trigger the spread of disease. The very premises meant to safeguard public health are now endangering it.

Social worker Nityananda Olakadu pointed out that such issues recur every monsoon, yet no permanent solution has been implemented. He suggested that the ground be leveled and paved with cement tiles. “If the area is permanently tiled, it will prevent weed growth, keep the surroundings clean, and eliminate mosquito breeding as well as the risk of snakes and other poisonous creatures,” he said.

He, along with Tharanath Mesta Shiruru of the Udupi District Citizens Committee, urged the district health department and the municipal administration to immediately take up the task of clearing the overgrowth.

The health department must act without delay. Cleaning drives should be carried out regularly around hospitals and health centres, especially ahead of and during the rainy season, to prevent health hazards.
