Tesla enters Indian market with model Y, Kia & VinFast also launch EVs

Mumbai, Jul 15: After years of speculation and delays, American EV giant Tesla has officially announced its much-anticipated entry into the Indian market. The company will begin operations in 2025, with its first showroom set to open in Mumbai. Contrary to earlier expectations of the Model 3 making the debut, Tesla has now confirmed that the Model Y will be the first vehicle to be launched in the country.

The move has created a major buzz among automobile enthusiasts, marking a significant moment for India’s growing electric vehicle (EV) landscape. Tesla’s Model Y will come with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) variants. The Long-Range AWD version offers a driving range of 530 km on a single charge, powered by a 75-kWh battery pack.

Adding to the excitement, Kia India has also launched its first seven-seater electric MPV, the Carens Clavis EV, on the same day. It is based on the recently launched ICE version and shares several design elements. The Clavis EV is expected to offer two battery pack options – a 51.4 kWh pack with a claimed range of 490 km, and a smaller 42 kWh version.

The EV momentum doesn't stop there. Vietnamese automaker VinFast has also opened pre-bookings for its first two electric SUV models in India – the VF6 and VF7, which are expected to hit the Indian roads soon.

As India embraces a cleaner automotive future, the simultaneous launch announcements from Tesla, Kia, and VinFast mark a new chapter in the country's transition to electric mobility.
