Tehran, Jul 13: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sustained a leg injury in an Israeli airstrike on June 16 that targeted a high-level meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in western Tehran, Iranian media affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has confirmed.
According to the Fars News Agency, the missile strike hit a building in the Shahrak-e Gharb area, where top Iranian officials including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei were present. The Israeli operation reportedly aimed to eliminate multiple senior Iranian figures, using a tactic similar to the one employed in a past assassination attempt on Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
The precision attack involved six missiles striking the entry and exit points of the building, intending to trap officials inside and disrupt air circulation. However, Iranian officials escaped through an emergency hatch prepared in advance. Several sustained minor injuries while exiting.
President Pezeshkian had previously alleged that Israel attempted to assassinate him. “They did try, yes… They acted accordingly, but they failed,” he said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson.
The airstrike was part of a broader 12-day conflict during which Israel is said to have killed several top Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists, including IRGC Commander Hossein Salami, Armed Forces Chief Mohammad Bagheri, and IRGC Air Force Commander Amir Ali Hajizadeh.
Reports suggest that Israel also planned to target Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but failed to find the right opportunity during the offensive.
Iranian authorities are now probing the possibility of an infiltrator leaking precise information about the meeting location and timing, raising fresh concerns about internal security lapses.
