Bengaluru, July 4: In connection with a gold smuggling case involving about Rs 15 crore worth of contraband, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday provisionally attached immovable assets worth Rs 34.12 crore belonging to Kannada actress Ranya Rao.

According to officials, the seizure was carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in relation to an international gold smuggling and illegal money transfer racket. The properties are located in Bengaluru and Tumakuru districts.

The attached assets include a residence in Victoria Layout, a plot in Arkavathi Layout, an industrial plot in Tumakuru, and agricultural land in Anekal taluk.

On the night of March 3, Ranya Rao had arrived at Kempegowda International Airport from Dubai via an Emirates flight. She was intercepted by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), who found 14.80 kg of gold in her possession. She was immediately taken into custody.

Ranya Rao and her associates are currently lodged at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.

Although bail was granted, Ranya Rao and her two associates—Tarun Koduru Raju and Sahil Sakariya Jain—have not been released from jail as they have been detained under the stringent Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA), 1974.
