Live-in partner strangles woman, dumps body in garbage truck; Bengaluru police arrest accused

Bengaluru, June 30: A chilling murder case has come to light in Bengaluru after the body of a woman was found stuffed in a sack and dumped in a garbage truck. Police have arrested the woman’s live-in partner, who confessed to the crime following an investigation backed by CCTV evidence.

The deceased, identified as Asha, aged 40, had been in a live-in relationship with Mohammed Shamshuddin, 33, for over a year and a half. According to police, the couple had been residing in a rented house in Hulimavu, South Bengaluru, and had presented themselves to the community as husband and wife, despite both being legally married to other individuals.

The gruesome discovery was made on Sunday, June 29, when Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) sanitation workers came across a gunny bag containing a woman’s body with her hands tied, inside a garbage truck. Following the report, police registered a case of murder, sent the body for post-mortem, and launched a thorough investigation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Lokesh B Jagalasar, stated that CCTV footage and other forensic leads helped trace the accused. “There was an argument between the two, which escalated into a physical confrontation. The accused is believed to have strangled Asha to death during the altercation,” he said.

Following the murder, Shamshuddin allegedly placed Asha’s body in a sack, transported it on a two-wheeler, and disposed of it in a garbage truck, hoping to avoid detection. Surveillance cameras in the area captured parts of the incident, aiding the police in swiftly identifying and apprehending the suspect.

Asha, a widow, had been working with Urban Company, providing housekeeping services. Shamshuddin, originally from Assam, is also married, with his wife and two children still residing in Assam.

This case has sparked fresh concerns over unreported domestic abuse and crimes involving live-in relationships, particularly when background checks and family history are unclear to surrounding communities.

The Bengaluru police continue their investigation and are expected to file a detailed chargesheet soon.

A live-in relationship is a kind of bond that usually doesn't last very long. In the beginning, it might feel peaceful, but over time, cracks start to form in the relationship. However, killing someone is absolutely wrong—Mohammed Shamsuddin should be given the death penalty."
