Mangaluru, June 30: Intermittent rains over the past few days in the coastal region have led to a spike in seasonal infections like colds and fevers. Health officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and take precautions during the monsoon.
Currently, rainfall in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts has slowed, with cloudy and sunny weather alternating. However, the sporadic rains and stagnant water have created favourable conditions for the spread of viral infections. A growing number of children are visiting clinics with symptoms like fever, cold, and cough.

In response, the health department has launched door-to-door surveys to raise awareness and detect early symptoms of communicable diseases. Schools have been instructed to ensure cleanliness, and teachers are monitoring students closely for any signs of illness. Special attention is also being given to migrant labourers, with building owners instructed to ensure mandatory health screenings.
Dengue threat resurfaces
The pattern of intermittent rains has revived fears of a dengue outbreak in the coastal belt. Although the number of cases this year is currently lower than last year, the presence of stagnant water in several areas has created breeding grounds for mosquitoes. As of now, there are 70 reported dengue cases in Dakshina Kannada district, and officials fear the number could rise.
