Iran condemns US strikes on nuclear sites, calls for UN action over gross violation

Tehran, Jun 22: Iran has issued a scathing condemnation of the recent US airstrikes on three of its nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—calling the attack a “brutal military aggression” and a flagrant breach of international law and the UN Charter.

In a strongly worded statement, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the strikes as a direct attack on its peaceful nuclear infrastructure, and squarely placed responsibility on the United States and its alleged cooperation with Israel.

“This was a grave crime committed in unprecedented violation of the UN Charter and the principles of international law. The Islamic Republic holds the warmongering and law-breaking US government accountable for the dangerous consequences of this aggression,” the ministry declared.

Tehran also accused the US of acting in “criminal complicity” with what it referred to as the “genocidal Zionist regime”, blaming Israel for escalating tensions and orchestrating the attacks. The strikes came on the tenth day of ongoing Israeli military operations against Iran, further fuelling Iran’s claims of coordinated hostility.

Iran stressed that all the nuclear sites targeted were under IAEA safeguards and used exclusively for peaceful purposes. It said the attacks constituted a violation of both Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

“Iran reserves the right to defend itself with full force against such US military aggression and crimes. We will take all necessary steps to protect national security and interests,” the statement added.

In response, Iran has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, and urged the IAEA Board of Governors to convene and address the strikes. Tehran also took aim at the IAEA leadership, accusing Director General Rafael Grossi of “clear bias”, claiming his actions provided justification for the attack.

“It is now clear to the international community that a country claiming permanent membership in the UN Security Council refuses to uphold global norms and will commit any violation to serve the interests of a genocidal, occupying regime,” the ministry concluded.

The developments mark a dangerous new phase in Middle East tensions, with Iran signalling it will not remain passive in the face of what it calls an assault on its sovereignty and peaceful nuclear ambitions.
