Start your day right: Experts recommend heart-healthy, nourishing breakfast habits

New Delhi, Jun 21: A well-balanced morning routine can be the cornerstone of good health, say medical experts, who are urging people to pay more attention to how they break their fast each day.

“Breaking your fast the right way is just as important as the fast itself,” noted Dr Alok Chopra, cardiologist and functional medicine expert, in a recent Instagram post. Stressing the importance of avoiding energy crashes and blood sugar spikes, Dr Chopra offered practical tips for a healthy start to the day.

He recommends beginning the morning by hydrating with plain water, coconut water, or warm bone broth to gently activate the digestive system. He cautioned against high-carb and sugary meals first thing in the morning, advising instead to go for fiber-rich, slow-digesting carbohydrates such as berries, sweet potatoes, or vegetables.

“Stay away from fried, processed, or sugary foods after fasting,” he advised. “They can lead to bloating and fatigue.” Dr Chopra encourages including protein and healthy fats like eggs, nuts, avocado, or Greek yogurt to maintain steady energy levels and avoid blood sugar spikes.

Echoing this advice, Dr Prateek Chaudhary, senior interventional cardiologist at Asian Hospital, Faridabad, highlighted the link between breakfast and heart health. Speaking to HT Lifestyle in May 2025, he said, “A heart-healthy breakfast not only fuels your body for the day but also supports cardiovascular health by helping control blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight.”

Dr Chaudhary emphasised choosing light, cooling, fiber-rich, and nutrient-dense foods to avoid sluggishness and promote overall well-being.

As experts continue to underline, how you start your day could well determine how the rest of it unfolds—for both your mind and your body.
