Udupi, Aug 14: Writer, thinker and scholar Vidwan Varadaraj Ballal passed away at his residence in Kidiyoor on Wednesday at the age of 97.
Born in 1930, Ballal served as a professor at Udupi's Sanskrit Mahapathashala for 10 years before joining Poornaprajna College, Udupi, where he taught Hindi for 37 years and retired as a professor.
Ballal was also known for his lectures on the writings and philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurti, which were broadcast several times on All India Radio.
He translated the noted Hindi work 'Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum', written by Mumbai-based industrialist and author Ghanshyamdas Birla, into Kannada.
Ballal is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.
