Mangaluru, Jun 19: A severely injured male cobra, around six feet long and estimated to be 12–15 years old, has been successfully treated and released into the wild after losing sight in one eye and suffering head injuries.
Wildlife rescuer Dheeraj from Bantwal found the snake in a critical state, with wounds near its venom gland and a serious infection. The reptile was handed over to veterinary couple Dr Yashasvi Naravi and Dr Meghana Pemmaiah, who conducted surgery, cleaned and sutured the wound, and monitored its recovery over four days.
Dr Yashasvi noted that the injury may have resulted from construction activity, a growing cause of harm to snakes in the region. He added that the community's willingness to rescue cobras likely stems from the species' cultural significance.
Once stable and pain-free, the cobra was released back into its natural habitat.
