Ranchi, Jun 18: In a remarkable tale of grit and determination, Rohit Kumar, a 20-year-old youth from Jamshedpur who earns a living by selling mobile phone covers at a roadside stall, has scored an impressive 549 marks in the NEET-UG 2025 examination. With an All India Rank (AIR) of 12,484, he is now hopeful of securing a seat in a government medical college in Jharkhand.
Rohit's father, who once worked in a vegetable market, now runs a small mobile accessories shop along with his elder brother. The young achiever began his academic journey in a government school and later joined a private coaching institute that charged a nominal fee of just Rs 800. However, after Class 10, the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to work at a medical store—an experience that sparked his interest in the field of medicine.

With no knowledge of NEET initially, Rohit chose physics, chemistry, and biology in class 11 and began preparing in earnest. Despite working during the day, he consistently excelled in board exams. His daily routine involved selling mobile covers during the day and studying late into the night—sometimes staying up until 3 am and resuming studies by 7 am the next morning.
“Though I believed I would clear NEET, I never expected to score this well,” Rohit shared. “I used to study until noon and then work at the shop from 12 to 4 pm. After returning home, I would continue studying until midnight.” He credited his brother’s support and the free coaching provided by Physics Wallah, an online education platform, for his success.
Rohit said he earned around Rs 500 a day from selling mobile covers. He mentioned that Physics Wallah did not charge him any fees. “After my second attempt, based on my performance, I was offered a free batch. I also regularly attended free YouTube sessions for guidance,” he said.
He stressed the importance of thoroughly following NCERT textbooks, continuous practice, and regular revision for NEET aspirants. “Anyone preparing for NEET should strictly follow the NCERT syllabus and revise consistently,” he advised.
The inspirational journey of Rohit Kumar caught the attention of Alakh Pandey, founder and CEO of Physics Wallah, who personally visited his shop to congratulate him. A video of Pandey hugging Rohit and praising his dedication has gone viral. “Meeting such hardworking students reminds us that for many children, education is not a choice but a necessity. It is truly a joy to meet such inspiring individuals,” said Pandey.
Rohit Kumar’s journey from a small roadside stall to securing a future in medicine stands as a powerful example of how perseverance, family support, and free educational resources can change lives.
