Mangaluru, June 17: Mangaluru has been witnessing heavy rainfall over the past few days, leading to waterlogging and severe damage to houses in several areas.

In Kannur, five homes were completely destroyed following a landslide from a nearby hill. The affected families, including those of Hameed Ustad, Maimuna, Saadiq, and Shenaaz, are now in a dire situation.

Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, accompanied by former corporator of the Kannur ward, Chandravathi, visited the site and assessed the extent of the damage.

Saadiq, one of the residents affected, recounted the harrowing experience: “Around 3 am, the hill behind our homes collapsed due to the heavy downpour. Since there was no proper drainage for the rainwater, the hill gave way. Every day we tried to create a path for the water to flow, but the intensity of the rain led to a massive landslide, damaging five houses.”

MLA Vedavyas Kamath stated, “Due to the relentless rains over the last few days, five houses at Dayambu Gudde in Kannur were severely damaged. Over 100 houses are located near the railway track in Kannur, but they lack proper road connectivity, which is a constant struggle for the residents. I plan to utilise Rs 3 crore from the minority welfare fund to develop infrastructure in Dayambu Gudde, including roads that can accommodate four-wheelers. During medical emergencies, residents are forced to carry patients on foot due to the lack of motorable roads. We also plan to construct an underpass in the area, and I have already spoken to minister V Somanna regarding this. Additionally, a new road is under construction, and we will seek the necessary permission from the railway department.”

In the Mangaluru City so many hills are levelled or half flattened. In Bijay next to Surabi and further upto Kottara cross. Also, in Kadri behind fuel station Nagoory, Capitanio residential apartments are raised on the hills. Story goes on. Importantly Lighthouse hill where City Mall is built. God knows !
