Waterlogged coastal road tunnel nearly claims car: Food inspector escapes with minor injuries

Mumbai, Jun 14: A potential tragedy was averted inside Mumbai’s newly opened coastal road tunnel when a car driven by food inspector Vikas?Sonawane skidded on a water slicked stretch, overturned, and came to rest on its roof.

Sonawane was heading southbound from Haji?Ali toward Marine?Drive when he spotted a sizeable pool of water ahead. As he braked, the wheels lost traction, sending the vehicle into a spin before it flipped. Thanks to his seatbelt, the driver suffered only minor bruises.

Traffic officers reached the scene within minutes, righted the overturned car, and, after a quick mechanical check, allowed Sonawane to drive away. The mishap caused only a brief traffic slowdown, and no public property was damaged; police said no FIR was filed.

In the wake of the incident, municipal and tunnel-management officials have begun inspecting drainage and safety systems along the coastal road, concerned that waterlogging so soon after its inauguration could signal larger maintenance issues.
