New Delhi, Jun 8: With the onset of the rainy season, the menace of rats and rodents escalates, bringing not just nuisance but serious health risks.
Recent deaths in the US due to hantavirus have reignited awareness about the potentially fatal diseases that these creatures can spread—even within our homes.

Here are some of the most dangerous rat-borne diseases to be aware of:
Bubonic Plague
Known historically as the Black Plague, this deadly disease wiped out millions during the Middle Ages. It is caused by rat fleas that bite humans, leading to fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, and sometimes death. While rare today, rat infestations can still pose this threat.
Hantavirus
Transmitted via rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, hantavirus can lead to two serious illnesses:
• Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) – affects the lungs, causing severe respiratory issues; nearly 38% of cases can be fatal.
• Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) – damages the kidneys and is prevalent in Europe and Asia.
Symptoms include fatigue, muscle aches, fever, nausea, and abdominal pain.
Salmonella (Salmonellosis)
This bacterial infection spreads through contact with rat feces, especially via contaminated food or surfaces. It causes flu-like symptoms such as fever, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF)
A group of viral infections that affect multiple organs and cause internal bleeding. Transmitted by rodents, VHF includes viruses like filoviruses and arenaviruses. Symptoms include chest pain, bloody diarrhea, low blood pressure, coma, seizures, and skin rashes.
Rat-Bite Fever (RBF)
Caused by bacteria found in rat saliva and urine, this condition can spread through bites or even scratches. Symptoms include joint pain, fever, vomiting, rash, and swelling near the bite site. If untreated, it can lead to severe complications.
Public Health Advisory:
With the increase in rodent activity during the monsoon, maintaining hygiene, sealing food containers, and keeping surroundings clean is crucial. If you suspect exposure or experience symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
