Chhindwara, May 27: The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPM-JAY), hailed as one of the world’s largest healthcare schemes, continues to transform lives across India including in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh.
Providing free treatment of up to Rs 5 lac per family for secondary and tertiary care, the scheme has come as a blessing to countless families who struggle with the financial burden of critical illnesses.

Nazia Khan from Chhindwara shared how the scheme helped save her husband Mustak Khan’s life after he was diagnosed with four heart blockages. After selling her jewellery to afford treatment for two of the blockages, Nazia was unable to pay for the rest. That’s when she discovered the Ayushman Bharat scheme, under which her husband received free treatment for the remaining blockages.
Similarly, Anil Kumar, suffering from a severe bone ailment, could not afford private hospital fees in Nagpur. His Ayushman card enabled him to undergo a successful operation without financial stress. “This card saved my life,” he said.
Deepak Khandelwal, who runs a private hospital in the region, emphasized how the scheme has helped underprivileged patients get critical treatment locally. “We treat many serious cases under Ayushman Bharat in Chhindwara itself,” he said.
The scheme currently covers around 55 crore people across India, with several states and Union Territories expanding its reach at their own cost, ensuring healthcare access for even more citizens in need.
