Vasco, May 20: In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across South Goa, a 34-year-old woman pedestrian was killed on the spot, and two others seriously injured after being hit by a motorcycle driven by an allegedly drunk youth near Three Kings Hall at Cansaulim on Sunday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Sangeeta Bind, a native of Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, who was residing in Verna. The accident occurred around 7:45 pm, when Sangeeta, along with her husband Serai Bind and their 13-year-old daughter, was walking along the roadside. Both the husband and daughter are currently undergoing treatment at the South Goa District Hospital.
This horrific incident comes close on the heels of another pedestrian fatality in Verna on Saturday night, sparking widespread concern over the rising number of accidents involving intoxicated drivers.
According to Verna police, the motorcycle was being ridden by Aryan Gaude, 21, from Shiroda, Ponda, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. Gaude, accompanied by a pillion rider, was heading from the Cansaulim market towards Verna when he lost control of the two-wheeler and rammed into the pedestrians.
“Both the rider and pillion were drunk at the time of the accident,” confirmed officials from Verna Police Station. Gaude sustained serious injuries and was shifted to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, while his pillion rider is being treated at the South Goa District Hospital.
Police have registered a case against Aryan Gaude under multiple sections, including Section 281 (rash driving), 125(a), 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurudas Kadam informed that the accused’s driving licence will be suspended. "We will also be submitting a detailed report to the RTO authorities, and a crackdown on drunk driving will be launched in the jurisdiction," he stated.
The investigation is being led by PSI Mahesh Bhomkar under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar.
The incident has triggered anger among locals, who are demanding stricter enforcement of traffic laws and enhanced surveillance in accident-prone zones. With back-to-back fatalities involving pedestrians, residents are calling for immediate measures such as increased patrolling, awareness drives, and installation of speed regulation mechanisms in the Verna-Cansaulim stretch.
As the Bind family reels from this devastating loss, the broader community mourns yet another life lost to reckless and irresponsible driving.
