Pomburpa-Olaulim, May 19: Tensions ran high at the Pomburpa-Olaulim gram sabha on Sunday as residents voiced strong opposition to the local panchayat's continued approval of large-scale construction projects, citing critical gaps in basic infrastructure.
At the heart of the villagers’ frustration is the ongoing water crisis plaguing the area. “We don’t have enough water and power for existing households. How will the village manage with more buildings coming up?” questioned several attendees, echoing growing concerns over the strain on essential resources.
The villagers demanded a halt to all construction approvals until a permanent Material Recovery Facility (MRF) shed is established. Currently, waste is managed through a temporary setup, which residents argue is inadequate for handling the increasing load.
“Unless and until a permanent MRF shed is in place, the panchayat cannot issue permission for constructions,” warned Dhiren Phadte, a local resident. He added that villagers are prepared to approach the High Court if the panchayat continues to issue construction clearances without addressing their concerns.
Road conditions also came under sharp criticism. Roads dug up over a year ago for underground cabling remain unrepaired, leading to multiple accidents and creating daily difficulties for motorists and pedestrians. “The roads are in terrible shape. The authorities must act now,” said Phadte, urging the panchayat to push the Public Works Department (PWD) and the local MLA for immediate repairs.
Traffic congestion on the village’s narrow roads was another major concern, with residents calling on the panchayat to request traffic department personnel to help manage vehicular flow, particularly during peak hours.
Sanitation issues also dominated the meeting, with villagers highlighting the indiscriminate dumping of waste at multiple locations by unidentified individuals. The growing garbage problem is adding to the village’s public health and environmental woes.
The gram sabha was chaired by Deputy Sarpanch Shankar Bude in the absence of the sarpanch, who is currently on leave.
Residents concluded with a stern warning: unchecked development without corresponding infrastructure upgrades will severely impact the quality of life in the village. They urged the panchayat to take swift, tangible action on all fronts.
