Jammu, May 10: A Border Security Force (BSF) sub-inspector was killed and seven others were injured in unprovoked Pakistani firing along the International Border in the R S Pura sector of Jammu on Saturday, just hours before a formal ceasefire was set to take effect.

The BSF identified the slain trooper as sub-inspector Mohammed Imteyaz, who succumbed to injuries sustained while “gallantly leading from the front,” according to a senior officer. The injured personnel were rushed to the hospital and are undergoing treatment.

“We salute the supreme sacrifice made by BSF braveheart sub-inspector Md Imteyaz in service of the nation on May 10, during cross-border firing along the International Boundary in R S Pura area, district Jammu,” read a post by the BSF Jammu frontier on X.

The BSF also extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family. A wreath-laying ceremony in honour of the fallen officer will be held at the BSF frontier headquarters in Paloura on Sunday.

The BSF guards over 2,000 km of the Indo-Pak frontier. The incident occurred just before India and Pakistan agreed to halt all military operations across land, air and sea starting 5 pm Saturday, a decision confirmed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri following talks between the directors general of military operations of both nations.
