Mohali, May 7: In a significant mid-season shake-up, Punjab Kings have roped in rising Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen as a replacement for veteran star Glenn Maxwell, and head coach Ricky Ponting has labelled the young gun an "exciting package" ahead of the franchise’s next clash in IPL 2025.
Ponting, who has closely followed Owen’s progress in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), was effusive in his praise for the 23-year-old Hobart Hurricanes standout. “He’s a very exciting player, someone who can bat in multiple positions and bowl handy medium pace. I’ve watched him closely over the past year, and our assistant coach James Hopes has also worked with him at the Hurricanes,” said Ponting.
Owen joins PBKS for Rs 3 crore, boasting a solid T20 record with 646 runs in 34 matches, including two centuries and a highest score of 108. A handy seam option, he has also bagged 10 wickets in the format.
Sharing his excitement, Owen said, “It’s a huge honour to join Punjab Kings. I’m grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to contribute to the team.”
Backing the youngster, PBKS CEO Satish Menon added, “Mitchell has the skillset and temperament to thrive in IPL conditions. He’s a bright talent and we look forward to seeing him make an impact.”
With the business end of the tournament heating up, Punjab Kings face Delhi Capitals in a pivotal encounter at Dharamsala on Thursday, with Owen expected to bolster their middle-order depth and bowling options.
