Mangaluru: Social media posts disrupting peace in wake of Suhas Shetty murder, multiple cases filed

Mangaluru, May 2: In the aftermath of the murder of rowdy-sheeter Suhas Shetty near Kinnipadavu in the Bajpe police station limits, several individuals and groups have allegedly used social media platforms to incite hatred between communities, thereby disrupting peace and harmony. In response, Mangaluru city police have registered a series of cases across various police stations under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.

Two cases have been filed at Mulki police station against a YouTube user and an Instagram account. Mangaluru North police station has registered a case over a post declaring a full-day bandh in Dakshina Kannada in protest of Suhas Shetty’s murder. Urwa police registered a case against two Instagram profiles with provocative content that allegedly incited communal hatred and unlawful activities.

Barke police station recorded a case against multiple social media users. Moodbidri police station registered a case against an Instagram account. Mangaluru South police registered two separate cases against Instagram accounts.

Kavoor Police also filed two cases against a user of Instagram account and a YouTube user. Kankanady town police station registered a case against an Instagram account. Mangaluru East police station also registered a case against an Instagram account.

Meanwhile, following the bandh call in connection with the Bajpe incident, stones were pelted at buses at three locations in Mangaluru city. As a result, three cases were registered in Kadri, Barke, and Mangaluru North police stations.

In Kadri police station, a case was registered after miscreants pelted stones at five KSRTC buses in Kankanady, causing damage. In Barke police station, a case was filed after miscreants threw stones at a KSRTC bus near Karavali Grounds. Mangaluru North police station registered a case for stone-pelting on a private bus near KB Katte.

Additionally, three separate assault cases linked to the Bajpe incident have been registered in Kankanady, Ullal, and Kavoor police stations. In Kankanady police station, a person was attacked with a knife by three unidentified persons while walking on Yousuf Nagar Road in Kannur. In Ullal police station, two men on a bike followed a scooterist on Thokkottu Service Road and attempted to attack him with a weapon. In Kavoor police station, a case was registered, after five to six men in an Innova car verbally abused and assaulted a man who was standing near his scooter in Konchady.

The police have launched thorough investigations into all the above cases and are monitoring social media activity closely to prevent further escalation of communal tension.
